In this electrifying creative writing workshop led by Yexandra “Yex” Diaz, Instructor & Spoken Word Artist, you’ll dive deep into the art of storytelling, tapping into your emotions and experiences to craft compelling narratives that resonate with authenticity. Through dynamic techniques like slams, open mics, and collaborative pieces, Yex will ignite your creativity and empower you to not only refine your writing but also find the courage to share your voice with the world.
Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to read a short piece at Thought Fox’s first open mic event at the Velvet Mill’s Beer’d Brewing on June 5 (more details to come!).
In this workshop, we will:
Explore different modes of written self expression with which they can use to convey thought by marrying it with word. Including but not limited to; Poetry, Song, Rap & Storytellin
Learn how to transform their passion, pain and/or plight into purpose positively via written sentiment while strengthening their lyrical prowess
Create original pieces to share or compile for themselves depending on participants level of comfort
MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: YEX DIAZ
Yexandra “Yex” Diaz, Chicago born and New Haven raised, is an interdisciplinary artist and community leader who specializes in the medium of Spoken Word Poetry. Yex, whose love language is servitude, utilizes her voice as an instrument to highlight, heal and honor oppressed communities by uplifting afro-indigenous storytelling while evoking radical spiritualism. She serves many roles in the City of New Haven, ranging from Public Allies CT’s Senior Program Manager, connecting emerging leaders with local nonprofits, to a Consultant developing and delivering training rooted in addressing racial inequities.
Current Facilitator with the New Haven Arts Council Artist Corps, Yex has also served as the Resident Creative Writing Instructor for both Trinity College’s International Hip Hop Festival and Common Ground High School 5 years counting. Whether Educating at institutions statewide or gracing stages such as Long Wharf Theater and the historical Shubert, Yex can be found building capacity and making change at the intersection where the nonprofit sector, social justice and art meet.
